Wait ... was this presser about Luke? Or SB 1070? -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 30 Jul 2010 19:55:45 -0700
A Friday news conference was a great opportunity for elected leaders to brag about Luke Air Force Base being chosen as the preferred F-35 training base by the Air Force. A horde of media showed up at the Glendale Regional Public Safety Training Center, obviously anxious to hear more detailed new about the Valley and state's great fortune. There were nine TV cameras, a slew of photographers, and, well, at least one newspaper reporter. The news conference started out with U.S. Sen. John McCain and Gov. Jan Brewer lavishly dishing out praise to various West Valley mayors, state Sen. John Nelson and County ...read the rest of this post

Brewer: 1070 may need 'tweaking' -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 30 Jul 2010 10:21:30 -0700
With Judge Susan Bolton's injunction Wednesday against several key sections of Senate Bill 1070, some legal experts are predicting the law's most controversial provisions will never go into effect. Appearing on "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren" Thursday night, Gov. Jan Brewer said she had been in contact with legislative leaders Thursday to discuss making changes to the bill:  "Well, you know, Judge Bolton was pretty clear during the court hearing of things that she was concerned about," Brewer said, according to a transcript provided by the network.  "So it didn't come as a complete surprise to our attorneys or to ...read the rest of this post

Goddard: 'I think we could have done better' -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Wed, 28 Jul 2010 17:25:14 -0700
In the letter to Gov. Jan Brewer in which he stepped aside from defending Senate Bill 1070, Attorney General Terry Goddard expressed confidence that the lawsuits facing the bill could be defended. "I am confident that the state can win the lawsuits challenging SB1070," Goddard wrote on June 18. "Although by working together our claims would be better, it will now be up to your legal team alone to prevail." Goddard had previously noted his legal team's success in defending anti-immigration statutes, even ones that he personally disagreed with. At the time he sent this letter, officials with his campaign told me ...read the rest of this post

Why some Arizonans want to leave -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Wed, 28 Jul 2010 11:47:16 -0700
Likely to be lost in the SB 1070 shuffle today is this statistic from a new Rocky Mountain poll: 13 percent of people want to move to another state, the poll found (PDF link). For most of those polled, the desire to move away has nothing to do with the state's new illegal immigration law. Rather, it's the economy -- 52 percent of those wanting to move hope to find a better job elsewhere. If the results are true, they could make the state's economic recovery more difficult. "The rest of the story here is that we are lacking strong job growth as the main ...read the rest of this post

As the country reacts to Judge Susan Bolton's temporary injunction against SB 1070 today, here are some quick facts on state lawmakers' recent attempts to pass immigration laws courtesy of the National Conference of State Legislatures: In the first six months of 2010, state legislators introduced 1,374 bills and resolutions in 46 states relating to immigrants and refugees. This number is comparable to the first half of 2009, when 50 states considered more than 1,400 bills and resolutions pertaining to immigrants. Investigation no party for Fiesta Bowl -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Tue, 27 Jul 2010 14:47:04 -0700
The Fiesta Bowl's chairman is blasting Secretary of State Ken Bennett for asking the Attorney General's Office to conduct a criminal investigation into whether current and former bowl employees made illegal campaign contributions.  In a July 23 memo to bowl board and committee members, Fiesta Bowl Chairman Duane Woods said “the Secretary of State wasted our time, when he simply should have announced that they found no credible evidence to continue any investigation.”  Bennett, in a July 16 letter to Attorney General Terry Goddard, said the Secretary of State's probe left questions remaining about allegations that a non-profit that helps run the ...read the rest of this post

Dems take aim at Brewer's economic record -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Mon, 26 Jul 2010 14:30:14 -0700
The Arizona Democratic Party is taking Gov. Jan Brewer to task on her economic record in a new YouTube video launched on Friday. The video and accompanying news release are in response to campaign mailers that Brewer's camp began sending out in recent weeks, in which the governor says she is "Getting The Job Done for Arizona." The mailers tout Brewer's economic record on a host of topics, claiming that she balanced the budget, protected education and public safety, fought illegal immigration and is leading Arizona's job recovery. The Democratic Party takes issue with several of the claims in the mailer, party spokeswoman Jennifer Johnson said, ...read the rest of this post
