Republican state treasurer candidate Doug Ducey amends financial-disclosure statement -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Thu, 02 Sep 2010 18:11:38 -0700
Doug Ducey, Republican candidate for state treasurer, amended his financial-disclosure statement Thursday, in response to criticism for not being fully forthcoming about his finances. During the primary campaign, Democrats and Republicans alike had confronted Ducey about his financial disclosure statement. In the amendment, Ducey, former CEO of Cold Stone Creamery, listed assets and charities to which he and his wife, Angela, donated. The assets included trusts, investments, properties in Flagstaff and Paradise Valley and individual retirement accounts. Ducey also listed the businesses he had said he omitted in the original report because he was not required to: Cold Stone Creamery Real Estate, LLC, DAD Properties, LLC and The Ducey Group.  "To what extent my May ...read the rest of this post

Teeeny, tiny type won't do -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Thu, 02 Sep 2010 11:45:31 -0700
The Arizona Secretary of State's office is forwarding a complaint about legislative candidate Rich Davis to the Attorney General's office for enforcement. Davis, who ran for state Senate in east Phoenix's District 11, sent out a mailer that lacked an easy-to-read disclosure of who paid for the piece. The law requires the disclosure to be "be printed clearly and legibly in a conspicuous manner." Apparently, the type was so small that the state election director couldn't find it without "extensive inspection," -- which is pretty remarkable when you consider the mailer is not exactly billboard size. Davis lost last week to Rep. Adam ...read the rest of this post

County officials reach out to Bill Montgomery -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Tue, 31 Aug 2010 13:59:46 -0700
Some top officials in Maricopa County are extending olive branches to Bill Montgomery, the GOP nominee for County Attorney. For months, some officials fretted over a possible win by Montgomery, who they viewed as an Arpaio ally. Montgomery, though, has maintained he’s his own man and will stand up to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, even after the sheriff put $700,000 toward ads targeting Interim County Attorney Rick Romley to help Montgomery cinch the primary. Supervisor Andy Kunasek met with Montgomery Friday, his chief of staff Jim Bloom confirmed. He characterized the meeting as "very positive." Supervisor Fulton Brock reportedly talked with Montgomery, as well. ...read the rest of this post

Arpaio skewered in "Machete"? -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Tue, 31 Aug 2010 11:35:57 -0700
The rancor over Arizona's attempt at immigration enforcement might have died down- at least until the legislation hits the U.S. Court of Appeals in November- but the issue lives on in pop culture. Robert Rodriguez's movie "Machete" (opening Sept. 3) first popped up on the 1070 radar when he released a trailer in May that included mention of Arizona.  That proved to be a small sample of what the film has to offer. An article in "The Hollywood Reporter" notes that the film also contains a caricature of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and a politician whose stance on immigration could easily be mistaken for that ...read the rest of this post

Themes emerge in gubernatorial debate; poll suggests Brewer has big lead over Goddard -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Mon, 30 Aug 2010 14:10:00 -0700
A new Rasmussen Reports survey released Monday indicates that Gov. Jan Brewer has a substantial lead over Democratic foe Terry Goddard headed into this week's gubernatorial debate. While this marks the very early stage of the two-month long general election season, the new poll numbers suggest that Brewer has managed to maintain her edge, and that Goddard has made up little ground over the past few months. The latest survey indicates Brewer has 57 precent support, compared to Goddard's 38 percent. The margin is almost identical to previous surveys conducted earlier this year. The poll surveyed 500 "likely voters" on Wednesday, Aug. 25, the day ...read the rest of this post

Seel pulls out a win -- by 36 votes -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Sun, 29 Aug 2010 23:15:52 -0700
Final vote tallies in the District 6 House race show  Rep. Carl Seel has reversed his fortunes of election night and has won the second GOP nomination for the House seat. It was a nail-biter: Seel edged out running mate David Fitzgerald III by 36 votes, out of 35,417 cast.  Rep. Amanda Reeve, who was appointed to the seat earlier this year, held on to first place with 7,595 votes. Seel placed second with 7,296. The two Republicans advance to the Nov. 2 general election, where they will face Democrat Teri Conrad for the two House seats representing the north Valley.   ...read the rest of this post

Gov. Brewer condemns SB 1070 reference in fed's human rights report -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 27 Aug 2010 16:16:53 -0700
Gov. Jan Brewer's office is "condemning" a U.S. State Department report to the United Nations Human Rights Council because it mentions Arizona and Senate Bill 1070. Brewer, in a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is asking that the paragraph referencing the state's tough new immigration law be removed. The 29-page report, a first by the Obama Administration, is designed to show the nation's committment to human rights, and, according to the document, areas "where problems persist in our society." It notes that the Arizona law is being addressed in a court action and reiterates that it is the federal government's contention that it has ...read the rest of this post

Thomas may concede to Horne -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 27 Aug 2010 09:39:42 -0700
Andrew Thomas may concede to Tom Horne this afternoon in the Republican primary for attorney general. Thomas, who trails Horne by nearly 900 votes in the latest tallies, will release a statement "later this afternoon," his spokesman Jason Rose said on Twitter. Thomas cut into Horne's lead slightly this morning, reducing his margin from more than 1,000 votes to 893. That margin, coupled with the fact that there are thousands of votes left to be counted in Maricopa County, has caused some doubt that Thomas will actually concede the race. Rose did not return a phone call and an e-mail seeking clarification. Thomas is ...read the rest of this post

Thomas expected to concede to Horne -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 27 Aug 2010 09:39:42 -0700
Andrew Thomas is expected to concede to Tom Horne this afternoon in the Republican primary for attorney general. Thomas, who trails Horne by more than 1,000 votes in the latest tallies, will release a statement "later this afternoon," his spokesman Jason Rose said on Twitter. A Horne spokeswoman said their campaign was told that Thomas would concede. Thomas, the former Maricopa County attorney, was significantly outspent in the primary by Horne, the superintendent of public instruction. Thomas ran with public financing; Horne raised money privately. ...read the rest of this post
