Gov. Jan Brewer appears to have broadened her lead over her Republican primary opponents, according to a new telephone survey. The poll, released Monday, suggests she now has 61 percent support among would-be GOP voters, which would mark the second straight month of double digit increases. The survey, conducted by New Jersey-based polling firm Rasmussen Reports, once again attributes Brewer's showing to her signing of Senate Bill 1070, the state's tough new immigration law. The prospect of being dragged into court to explain why your nominating petitions are in order appears to be daunting to several candidates. On Monday, Anna Maria Brennan, who was hoping to seek the GOP nomination for state senator in east/northeast Phoenix's District 11, withdrew from the race just as a court hearing was about to air a challenge to her ballot status. She joins a growing list of former candidates. Scott Bergren, a would-be Republican state House candidate in the southeast Valley's District 21 withdrew rather than go to court. Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s political clout doesn’t extend to California. Arpaio, long the kingmaker in local Republican politics, threw his weight behind California gubernatorial candidate Steve Poizner for this year’s GOP primary. But even the clout of Arpaio, and Poizner’s attempt to use immigration as a wedge issue, wasn’t enough to save the California Insurance Commissioner’s bid. Poizner was trounced— receiving 26 percent of the vote— in a loss to former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, who took the nomination with 64 percent of the vote. Six other candidates split the remaining votes. A new telephone poll of likely Republican primary voters suggests that Gov. Jan Brewer is lengthening her lead over her opponents in the crowded GOP race for the state's top elected office. The survey, conducted by Rasmussen Reports, a New Jersey-based public-opinion polling firm, indicates that Brewer has 45 percent support, followed by state treasurer Dean Martin and Owen "Buz" Mills, both with 18 percent, and former Arizona Board of Regents President John Munger at three percent. Of those polled, 13 percent said they weren't sure which candidate they supported; an additional three percent they supported "some other candidate." If you're Buz Mills, GOP candidate for governor, you tie Jan Brewer to Terry Goddard and try to kill two birds with one Proposition 100 stone. The Arizona Republican Party put out a news release Monday touting its growing “edge” over the Democrats in terms of registered voters.| But not surprisingly, it glossed over some other, much less positive news: the ever rising number of independent voters. “Since October of 2009, Republicans have increased their margin over Democrat voters by nearly 6,000,” the release declares. The Ax the Tax campaign may have found a new metaphor and in the spirit of hand tools, it's another handyman special: a monkey wrench. No less than Joe the Plumber will be on hand at the state Capitol Friday to speak against Proposition 100, the temporary one-cent per-dollar increase in the state sales tax that goes before voters May 18. Gov. Jan Brewer is getting little support from her fellow Republican officials as she advocates for a temporary increase in the state sales tax. After U.S. senators John McCain and Jon Kyl issued a joint statement opposing the May 18 ballot measure, campaign spokesman David Leibowitz was reeling. Accounts vary about what state Treasurer Dean Martin said, or didn't say, when he spoke at the Lincoln Day dinner of the Cobre Valley Republicans. Steve Slaton, who, like Martin, is running for the GOP nomination for governor, said Martin boasted of instructing his treasury staff to not deposit money into the state's accounts. That maneuver allegedly saved the state millions because it wasn't there for then-Gov. Janet Napolitano to spend, Slaton recounted. Three men are the finalists for to fill the seat vacated by Sen. Jonathan Paton, R-Tucson. The precinct committeemen in Legislative District 30 have picked Rep. Frank Antenori, former state representative and congressional candidate Randy Graf and District 30 chairman Ted Vogt for the candidate slate that the Pima County Board of Supervisors will consider. The candidates to replace Jim Waring in the state Senate have been selected by local precinct-committee chairmen. They are state representatives Ray Barnes and Nancy Barto and District 7 Republican chairman Ed Bunch.
