The Ax the Tax campaign may have found a new metaphor and in the spirit of hand tools, it's another handyman special: a monkey wrench. No less than Joe the Plumber will be on hand at the state Capitol Friday to speak against Proposition 100, the temporary one-cent per-dollar increase in the state sales tax that goes before voters May 18. Gov. Jan Brewer is getting little support from her fellow Republican officials as she advocates for a temporary increase in the state sales tax. After U.S. senators John McCain and Jon Kyl issued a joint statement opposing the May 18 ballot measure, campaign spokesman David Leibowitz was reeling. Their stance, he said, reminded him of collateral damage -- sort of like an innocent bystander getting hit with a stray bullet after a drive-by shooting. John Munger once served as president as the Arizona Board of Regents, so it's no surprise he has strong backing from members of the education community. On Thursday the Republican gubernatorial candidate announced that Lisa Graham Keegan, who served two terms as Arizona's superintendent of public instruction and has advised Sen. by David Safier It's bash-the-Star day, I guess. Two gripes in one day. This morning I wrote about an awful, misleading headline. Now I'm complaining about what the paper didn't do. McCain made some robo-calls about the health care bill that may have broken Senate rules. If you want to know more about it, you can read the story in papers all over the country, including in the AZ Republic (It's a blog post, but at least it's there). It would have sent the entire 2,074-page bill back to the Senate Finance Committee for a redo. A competing amendment by Sen. The Hill reports AARP, seniors groups oppose McCain amendment: The nonpartisan AARP and two left-leaning seniors' groups on Wednesday separately urged Senate lawmakers to reject an amendment that would strip some Medicare changes from the chamber's healthcare bill. While the amendment's author, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), stressed upon introducing his effort this week that it would shield seniors from Democrats' proposed cuts, the three seniors groups on Wednesday independently concluded McCain's proposal would do both Medicare and the entire healthcare reform process more harm than good.

As Keith Olbermann noted in his intro to McCain's "remarkable performance" that "you'll have to see to believe" 'Countdown with Keith Olbermann' for Monday, November 30 John McCain has just stepped into the health care debate. Well, he stepped in a lot more than just that actually. Senator McCain complains about the lack of specifics about supposed cuts to Medicare, then he lists them specifically. And he warns Americans of, quote, “all kind of provisions” that they‘re either unaware of or many of us have also become unaware of.

On Friday a few days ago at a townhall, he asked people to cut up their AARP membership cards. * * * As everyone knows, a week-and-a-half ago, the AARP, America's largest non-corporate lobby, endorsed H.R. 3962 because the bill was going to incrementally close the Medicare Part D "donut hole" and help prevent the elderly from being left out in the cold. This didn't please congressional Republicans one bit and they tried to downplay it.

Since the early 2000s advocates of net neutrality and associated rules have raised concerns about the ability of broadband providers to use their last mile infrastructure to block Internet applications and content (e.g. websites, services, protocols), particularly those of their competitors. Neutrality proponents claim that telecom companies seek to impose a tiered service model in order to control the pipeline and thereby remove competition, create artificial scarcity, and oblige subscribers to buy their otherwise uncompetitive services.
