There may be five candidates still vying for the Republican nomination for governor, but as far as state treasurer Dean Martin is concerned, only two count: him and incumbent Gov. Jan Brewer. Martin, speaking at a press conference to announce his border security plan on Tuesday, effectively eliminated from the competition opponents Tom Gordon of Mesa, Matt Jette of Apache Junction, and, most surprisingly, Owen "Buz" Mills, a Paulden businessman. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Gray's Twitter account is drawing a lot of attention this week. It's not for what he's said/tweeted: it's for whom he's elected to follow. Gawker, a New York-based gossip site, looked through the Mesa Republican's Twitter followers and found StormfrontWPWW (for White Power WorldWide), a white-supremacist organization started by Don Black, a former KKK Grand Wizard and member of the American Nazi Party. Wikipedia has added Arizona's new immigration law to its site of data. It even includes a smiling photo of bill sponsor Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa. Now we haven't fact checked all of it, but we did find some errors in the reference. For one, the new law goes into effect on July 29 according to the state Legislative Council. Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, sponsor of the immigration bill making national headlines, issued a press release today asking one of his favorite questions. "When is enough enough?" According to the release, Pearce and the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association are condemning an incident they state happened Thursday in which a Phoenix Police officer "escaped serious injury, diving out of the way of a car driven by an illegal alien." Ouch! Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, responded to Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Michael Mahoney's criticism of his immigration bill on the Philadelphia-based radio show of Michael Smerconish. Mahoney had compared Senate Bill 1070 to Nazi and Communist techniques. Pearce said Mahoney should be the last one to criticize the bill. At a morning news conference, a group representing clergy and business denounced Senate Bill 1070, Sen. Russell Pearce's wide-ranging illegal immigration bill and tiptoed up to the edge of calling the Mesa senator a modern-day Hitler. Three Republican lawyers have jumped in the race for Maricopa County Attorney, according to paperwork filed with the county Elections Department. Andrew Thomas stepped down from the position Monday to run for state attorney general. The candidates are Bill Montgomery, a deputy county attorney; Jay Beckstead, a private attorney and former county prosecutor; and Justin Pierce, a Mesa attorney. Candidates have until 5 p.m. May 26 to file petition signatures with the elections department, said director Karen Osborne.
