Governor lashes out at feds for possible SB 1070 suit -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Thu, 17 Jun 2010 16:02:29 -0700
The U.S. Department of Justice won't say whether it has decided to sue Arizona over its tough new immigration law, but according to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, a legal case is already a done deal. Clinton made the assertion in an interview with an Ecuadorian television station that was taped on June 8. The remarks made their way into the mainstream media and the blogosphere Thursday. "President Obama has spoken out against the law because he thinks that the federal government should be determining immigration policy," Clinton said in the interview . "And the Justice Department, under his direction, will be bringing ...read the rest of this post

Have you read Arizona's immigration law? -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 21 May 2010 17:34:17 -0700
Have you read it? That’s the question of the week in the debate over Arizona’s new immigration law. If you have, you might enjoy the SecuretheBorder.org video of the frog singing a song mocking those who admitted they have not. Gov. Jan Brewer apparently got a kick out of it. “Broken borders are not a laughing matter, but the failure by Obama’s trusted officials to read Arizona’s law before commenting and condemning it is laughable,” said a press release issued by Brewer’s campaign staff. Here's the video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6qEQ-KnitQ If you haven’t read it and don’t want to, you can listen to KFYI radio ...read the rest of this post

Governor wants helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles to support border security effort -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 21 May 2010 12:23:57 -0700
Gov. Jan Brewer has sent another salvo in her ongoing war of wars with the federal government regarding border security, this time seeking helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles to help combat illegal drug trafficking. In a May 20 letter to President Barack Obama, Brewer askings the federal government to reallocate some of the nation's network of OH-58 Kiowa helicopters to Arizona for use in border missions. The state currently has 13 such helicopters, but nine are dedicated to training missions, leaving only four to support actual law enforcement efforts. According to a distribution map provided by Brewer's office, the federal government has 158 OH-58 ...read the rest of this post

Gov. Brewer YouTube video viewed more than 584,000 times -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Mon, 10 May 2010 14:17:01 -0700
Gov. Jan Brewer's latest campaign video, in which she criticizes President Barack Obama for making light of Arizona's border security woes, is generating a lot of interest on YouTube. The video, which was first uploaded to the site on Friday, had been viewed over 584,000 times as of 2 p.m.  Such viewership is presumably what prompted Brewer's campaign to put out a release Monday afternoon, calling the video a "national sensation." While we aren't willing to going to go that far, trending information published on the YouTube site does suggest that the number of people watching the video has been particularly high in the last ...read the rest of this post

Legislative Dems: Bring DNC convention to Phoenix -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 30 Apr 2010 15:15:54 -0700
Democrats in the Arizona House of Representatives are appalled and angry at the state's new immigration law. But they don't agree with calls to boycott the state, saying that would only hurt the economy and Arizona businesses. In fact, they say the state should go all out to get the Democratic National Committee to hold its 2012 convention in Phoenix. "I think it's more important than ever that the DNC come here," House Minority Whip Chad Campbell said at a Friday news conference. "We want a national spotlight on this state." Ummm..that spotlight is already there. But Campbell, D-Phoenix, said bringing President Barack Obama ...read the rest of this post

Hawaii Legislature: Enough with the birther requests -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Wed, 28 Apr 2010 11:41:25 -0700
The Hawaii Legislature has passed a bill that would allow the state to ignore repeated requests for documents under the public-records law. The bill is a response to the "birther" movement, which has pressed to see the original copy of Barack Obama's birth certificate in its quest to verify whether he is a U.S. citizen. Obama was born in Hawaii on Aug. 4,1961, according to Hawaii records, but the birther movement doubts that and wants to see the original copy of his birth certificate. The bill is on the desk of Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, a Republican. It is not clear ...read the rest of this post

Immigration bill gives Gov. Jan Brewer bump in new poll of Arizona voters -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Wed, 28 Apr 2010 09:36:19 -0700
Gov. Jan Brewer's signing of the nation's toughest immigration law appears to be sitting well with Arizona voters.   A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey, released this morning, shows that 56 percent of respondents now approve of Brewer's job performance as Governor. In a poll two weeks ago, just 40 percent said they approved of the job she was doing.   Rasmussen, a New Jersey-based opinion polling firm, tracks President Barack Obama's daily job approval rating and does regular surveys on other hot button topics.   The outfit's newest poll, which surveyed 500 likely Arizona voters by telephone on Tuesday, is attributing Brewer's bounce to her ...read the rest of this post

Pearce responds to Obama -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 23 Apr 2010 10:57:24 -0700
Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, sponsor of the immigration bill making national headlines, issued a press release today asking one of his favorite questions. "When is enough enough?" According to the release, Pearce and the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association are condemning an incident they state happened Thursday in which a Phoenix Police officer "escaped serious injury, diving out of the way of a car driven by an illegal alien." "This is outrageous. As protesters carry coffins in mock funerals, an illegal alien tries to kill a Phoenix police officer simply trying to enforce the law," Pearce stated in the release. The release also criticizes interim Maricopa ...read the rest of this post

Hispanic group blames Obama for Pearce's immigration bill -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 16 Apr 2010 12:44:21 -0700
Somos Republicans, which is the voice of various Latino Republicans, denounced SB1070 and promised to work against the election of Republicans who support the bill. And they blamed the legislation that has inflamed passions nationwide on President Obama. "SB 1070 is a direct failure of the Obama administration because Obama liked to Hispanics when he promised to pass fair immigration reform within 90 days of his Presidency," the group stated in a news release. Absent federal action, Sen. Russell Pearce and like-minded Republicans felt free to step in and push their brand of immigration reform, the group stated. Not that they're letting Republicans off ...read the rest of this post

Joe the Plumber picks up the Ax-the-Tax hatchet -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Mon, 22 Mar 2010 18:02:03 -0700
The Ax the Tax campaign may have found a new metaphor and in the spirit of hand tools, it's another handyman special: a monkey wrench. No less than Joe the Plumber will be on hand at the state Capitol Friday to speak against Proposition 100, the temporary one-cent per-dollar increase in the state sales tax that goes before voters May 18. Plumber, er Joe Wurzelbacher,  bubbled to national fame in 2008,  when he challenged then-candidate Barack Obama  on his tax plans and became the instant best friend of GOP nominee John McCain.  Wurzelbacher has since denounced McCain, saying he felt  “used.” This ...read the rest of this post

AZ bill goes straight to Obama...sorta -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 05 Mar 2010 10:03:47 -0700
House Bill 2441, nicknamed the "birther bill," got some national attention on Thursday when a reporter asked White House spokesman Richard Gibbs to comment on it. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Judy Burges, R-Skull Valley, would require presidential candidates to submit proof of citizenship to the Arizona Secretary of State's Office to get on the state's ballot. Thirty-nine Republican Legislators have signed on in support of the bill, which passed the House Government Committee and awaits a full House vote. A reporter at the briefing asked Gibbs about President Barack Obama's reaction to the Associated Press article about the bill and the bill's Legislative ...read the rest of this post

Naming names on tax pledge....but not all of them -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Thu, 04 Feb 2010 07:29:46 -0700
Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform wasted little time in sounding the alarm on Arizona senators who broke their no-tax-increase pledge by voting to refer a temporary sales tax to the May 18 ballot. Within hours of the Senate's bipartisan, 16-12 vote, ATR was naming names on its website. “It's always unfortunate when lawmakers prove that they made a central campaign promise for reasons of political expediency, only later to demonstrate, much like Obama’s pledge not to raise taxes on those making less than $250,000 a year, that the commitment was hollow,” Norquist said in a statement posted on the site. Listed were Senate ...read the rest of this post
