The U.S. Department of Justice won't say whether it has decided to sue Arizona over its tough new immigration law, but according to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, a legal case is already a done deal. Clinton made the assertion in an interview with an Ecuadorian television station that was taped on June 8. The remarks made their way into the mainstream media and the blogosphere Thursday. Have you read it? That’s the question of the week in the debate over Arizona’s new immigration law. If you have, you might enjoy the SecuretheBorder.org video of the frog singing a song mocking those who admitted they have not. Gov. Jan Brewer apparently got a kick out of it. “Broken borders are not a laughing matter, but the failure by Obama’s trusted officials to read Arizona’s law before commenting and condemning it is laughable,” said a press release issued by Brewer’s campaign staff. Gov. Jan Brewer has sent another salvo in her ongoing war of wars with the federal government regarding border security, this time seeking helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles to help combat illegal drug trafficking. In a May 20 letter to President Barack Obama, Brewer askings the federal government to reallocate some of the nation's network of OH-58 Kiowa helicopters to Arizona for use in border missions. The state currently has 13 such helicopters, but nine are dedicated to training missions, leaving only four to support actual law enforcement efforts. Gov. Jan Brewer's latest campaign video, in which she criticizes President Barack Obama for making light of Arizona's border security woes, is generating a lot of interest on YouTube. The video, which was first uploaded to the site on Friday, had been viewed over 584,000 times as of 2 p.m. Such viewership is presumably what prompted Brewer's campaign to put out a release Monday afternoon, calling the video a "national sensation." Democrats in the Arizona House of Representatives are appalled and angry at the state's new immigration law. But they don't agree with calls to boycott the state, saying that would only hurt the economy and Arizona businesses. In fact, they say the state should go all out to get the Democratic National Committee to hold its 2012 convention in Phoenix. The Hawaii Legislature has passed a bill that would allow the state to ignore repeated requests for documents under the public-records law. The bill is a response to the "birther" movement, which has pressed to see the original copy of Barack Obama's birth certificate in its quest to verify whether he is a U.S. citizen. Obama was born in Hawaii on Aug. 4,1961, according to Hawaii records, but the birther movement doubts that and wants to see the original copy of his birth certificate. Gov. Jan Brewer's signing of the nation's toughest immigration law appears to be sitting well with Arizona voters. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey, released this morning, shows that 56 percent of respondents now approve of Brewer's job performance as Governor. In a poll two weeks ago, just 40 percent said they approved of the job she was doing. Rasmussen, a New Jersey-based opinion polling firm, tracks President Barack Obama's daily job approval rating and does regular surveys on other hot button topics. Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, sponsor of the immigration bill making national headlines, issued a press release today asking one of his favorite questions. "When is enough enough?" According to the release, Pearce and the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association are condemning an incident they state happened Thursday in which a Phoenix Police officer "escaped serious injury, diving out of the way of a car driven by an illegal alien." And they blamed the legislation that has inflamed passions nationwide on President Obama. House Bill 2441, nicknamed the "birther bill," got some national attention on Thursday when a reporter asked White House spokesman Richard Gibbs to comment on it. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Judy Burges, R-Skull Valley, would require presidential candidates to submit proof of citizenship to the Arizona Secretary of State's Office to get on the state's ballot. Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform wasted little time in sounding the alarm on Arizona senators who broke their no-tax-increase pledge by voting to refer a temporary sales tax to the May 18 ballot.
