Real excuses, no candidacy -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Mon, 07 Jun 2010 13:17:42 -0700
John Munger, R-No Longer Running for Governor, blamed his reluctant departure from the race on the state's Clean Elections system. It was NOT Gov. Jan Brewer's recent surge in popularity for signing SB1070 that drove him away, the Tucson Republican said. Rather, it was the state's public-campaign-finance law, which he was not using but which Brewer and Dean Martin are, allowing them to pull in $2.1 million each in public dollars for their campaigns. "I got out because the Clean Elections mechanism has made it impossibel for me," Munger told Insider last week. Hmmm....sounds like an excuse. A pretty good ...read the rest of this post

The Arizona Senate has given preliminary approval to legislation that would allow liquor to be sold after 6 a.m. on Sundays. Under current state law, liquor cannot be sold until 10 a.m. on Sundays. On Thursday, Sen. Frank Antenori, R-Tucson, proposed an amendment to House Bill 2143 that would change that restriction and allow liquor to be sold starting at 6 a.m. on Sundays, as is allowed during the other days of the week. Antenori said it would bring an additional $450,000 in revenue to the state. It'll also help out hotel housekeepers, he added. "This allows maids to restock the mini bar ...read the rest of this post

It’s a good thing Ty Abbott enjoys road games, because the next six days are going to be about living out of suitcases, walkthroughs in hotel conference rooms and a lot of verbal trash spewed in Arizona State’s direction.

Scouting around for free fishing licenses -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 12 Feb 2010 08:33:41 -0700
If it weren't for the crushing budget deficit, this could be the Year of the Boy Scout at the Arizona Legislature. Lawmakers hurried through a bill to designate Feb. 8 as the Boy Scout Holiday. On Thursday, there was lively debate over a bill to grant free fishing licenses to Eagle Scouts. But why stop at Eagle Scouts? Rep. Steve Farley, D-Tucson, proposed an amendment that would extend the privilege to Girl Scouts. “Maybe there are a ton of girls who want to go fishing,” said Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Phoenix.  “We'll never know without the Farley amendment.” Indeed. Farley's idea died along party lines, not gender ...read the rest of this post

Paton to announce campaign plans next week -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Wed, 06 Jan 2010 17:18:27 -0700
State Sen. Jonathan Paton, arguably the GOP's best shot to re-take the 8th Congressional District, told the Insider Wednesday that he'll make public his campaign plans by the middle to end of next week. Two Republican challengers - Jesse Kelly and Andy Goss - are already vying for the seat now held by Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. But the GOP establishment clearly believes Paton, a three-term legislator, U.S. Army captain and Iraq War veteran, could pull off the upset. "I think he'd be a very very formidable candidate," said Jim Click, a Tucson car dealer and one of the state's biggest donors to ...read the rest of this post

[Blog for Arizona] Star AWOL again -- politicker.com | Story Info
Thu, 10 Dec 2009 19:06:00 -0500
by David Safier It's bash-the-Star day, I guess. Two gripes in one day. This morning I wrote about an awful, misleading headline. Now I'm complaining about what the paper didn't do. McCain made some robo-calls about the health care bill that may have broken Senate rules. If you want to know more about it, you can read the story in papers all over the country, including in the AZ Republic (It's a blog post, but at least it's there). If you want to find out about it in Tucson, you'll find it here at BfA, courtesy of AzBlueMeanie, who linked to the story on Huffington Post.

ASU vs. Arizona game lacks sizzle -- eastvalleytribune.com | Story Info
Fri, 27 Nov 2009 17:16:34 -0700
Scott Bordow: In the good ol' days, when Frank Kush owned the city of Tucson, the University of Arizona Wildcats' season was defined by one game. If they beat Arizona State it was a successful year, no matter their record. If they lost, well, thank goodness for basketball. ASU, on the other hand, never has had a football inferiority complex when it comes to its southern neighbors.

ASU vs. U of A a lackluster game this year -- eastvalleytribune.com | Story Info
That's why it's so hard for Sun Devil fans to be enthusiastic about Saturday's game at Sun Devil Stadium.
