Brewer extends lead in GOP primary race, new poll suggests -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Tue, 22 Jun 2010 12:55:55 -0700
Gov. Jan Brewer appears to have broadened her lead over her Republican primary opponents, according to a new telephone survey. The poll, released Monday, suggests she now has 61 percent support among would-be GOP voters, which would mark the second straight month of double digit increases. The survey, conducted by New Jersey-based polling firm Rasmussen Reports, once again attributes Brewer's showing to her signing of Senate Bill 1070, the state's tough new immigration law. The firm, which uses an automated polling system, surveyed 707 likely GOP primary voters last Wednesday. It has a margin ...read the rest of this post

Huppenthal stays on ballot; Cheuvront tossed -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Thu, 17 Jun 2010 17:41:44 -0700
A Maricopa County Superior Court judge has dismissed the state Democratic Party's challenge to John Huppenthal's nominating petitions for state schools chief. Another judge also disqualified Sen. Ken Cheuvront from running for a justice of the peace post in central Phoenix. Judge Robert Oberbillig's reasoning in the Huppenthal case was not immediately available. But the Democrats had charged that the Chandler lawmaker should be barred from running for school superintendent because he had gathered his nominating-petition signatures while still exploring a run for the office. Earlier, Oberbilling rejected another Democratic Party challenge to Bob Thomas, who is seeking the Republican nomination for ...read the rest of this post

Brewer's comments about father's death, war service raise questions -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Wed, 02 Jun 2010 11:40:18 -0700
Gov. Jan Brewer, who has been the subject of some unflattering criticism since signing Senate Bill 1070 into law on April 23, appears to have misspoken about the death of her father and his war service in a recent interview with The Arizona Republic. Her comments have led some media outlets and political opponents to speculate that she lied about her father's service in World War II, or deliberately inflated it — an allegation her office is denying. In The Republic interview, Brewer talks about how hurt she has been by remarks that have likened her to a Nazi, and comments that ...read the rest of this post

Wed, 02 Jun 2010 09:41:25 -0700
There can be plenty to dislike about Arizona's sales-tax increase, which took effect Tuesday. But you can't blame it for driving up the cost of your grocery bill. That didn't stop congressional candidate Steve Moak from firing a shot at Prop. 100, claiming in a news release that it would add $100 to the food costs of an average family of four. But the 1-cent increase in the state sales tax doesn't apply to food. Many local communities tax groceries, but that's been the case for years, and the money goes to local coffers, not the state general fund. (Phoenix only recently ...read the rest of this post

How Goddard's campaign might use SB 1070 -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 28 May 2010 17:03:17 -0700
I had a chance to speak with Attorney General Terry Goddard today a few hours after the press conference in which he pledged to defend SB 1070 from the Justice Department, which is considering a lawsuit. As did Prop. 100, Brewer's signing of 1070 put the presumptive Democratic nominee into a difficult position politically. The bill is popular with a majority of Arizona residents, but not with Democratic primary voters. And while Goddard doesn't have a primary opponent, a motivated base will be important to him as he seeks to defeat the Republican nominee. For a Republican, full-throated support of 1070 is ...read the rest of this post

Governor reiterates her "no new tax cuts" pledge -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Mon, 17 May 2010 14:17:46 -0700
At a rally to urge support for her long-sought sales-tax increase, Gov. Jan Brewer again said she won't call the Legislature back into special session to consider tax cuts. "I am not looking forward to calling the Legislature to address the 'jobs bill,' " the governor said. But while ruling out broad-based tax cuts, she said she remains interested in tax incentives to spur economic recovery. Those incentives would be structured to pay for themselves -- in other words, the tax break would happen only after a certain number of jobs or revenue is created. When lawmakers might convene to consider incentives, ...read the rest of this post

Brewer, Munger trade barbs over border security -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Mon, 17 May 2010 11:52:52 -0700
Gubernatorial candidate John Munger -- having just filed his nominating petitions for the Governor's race -- took time to stop by the Capitol press room on Monday and levy a few jabs at one of his key opponents, incumbent Jan Brewer. Munger questioned Brewer's leadership on border security, among other things, predicting that any boost she had received in the polls as a result of signing Senate Bill 1070, the state's tough new immigration law, would be short-lived at best. "What is she doing besides sitting behind her desk, signing bills?" asked Munger, who said Brewer was a "crisis manager" but not a ...read the rest of this post

IOUs possible next year, treasurer says -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Thu, 13 May 2010 16:01:11 -0700
Arizona may be unable to pay its bills next year depending on the outcome of a ballot measure, Treasurer Dean Martin said Thursday at a news conference. "Unless the Legislature takes some sort of emergency action, we will be issuing IOUs somewhere down the road," Martin said on the first floor of the executive tower. Martin billed the press conference as a check-up on the state's financial health, which is grim. As of Wednesday, the state had issued $86.5 billion in treasurer's warrant notes, which permit short-term borrowing to cover operational expenses when the general fund falls below zero. The notes have ...read the rest of this post

Two of Arizona’s more vocal female lawmakers got into a battle of e-mails over Arizona’s tough new immigration law this week. Each offered her own take on what Senate Bill 1070 really does. Sen. Sylvia Allen, R-Snowflake, sent out an e-mail Monday with the subject line “I want to explain SB1070.” She supported the bill. Here’s her explanation, pasted directly from her e-mail: “The leftist media has distorted what SB 1070 will do. It is not going to set up a Nazi Germany. Are you kidding. Brewer shuns local media; plays ball with ESPN on immigration bill -- azcentral.com | Story Info

Gov. Jan Brewer on Wednesday gave a lengthy "exclusive" to ESPN.com, responding to calls for the state to be stripped of the 2011 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, among other things. Brewer and other state officials have been weathering an ongoing backlash, with multiple cities, businesses and other entities calling for boycotts of the state in the wake of its tough new immigration law. Brewer, by the way, has repeatedly given local media reporters only the same brief talking points on the subject, calling threats of boycotts "unfortunate" and "misguided." However, she opted to share her thoughts with ESPN in great detail. (Yes, we're bitter.) "Urging Major League ...read the rest of this post

Mon, 03 May 2010 23:20:49 -0700
The Rasmussen poll that found 70 percent of Arizonans support the policy behind the new immigration law has drawn its share of questions. So, to dispel doubt, take a look at the poll. It was taken two days after the Arizona House approved the bill, but before SB1070 moved to the Senate. Rasmussen contacted 500 Arizona "likely voters" and found that 70 percent support "legislation that authorizes local police to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant." A total of 23 percent opposed the policy. But 53 percent said they also were concerned that such a policy could ...read the rest of this post
