Key fundraisers leaving the state Dem Party -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Mon, 21 Jun 2010 11:10:37 -0700
Two of the Arizona Democratic Party's key fund-raising posts are being vacated, just as the party is headed into a hot election cycle. The announcements were made the same afternoon that the Terry Goddard campaign for governor confirmed that manager Rod McLeod was leaving because his commitment to starting the campaign was fulfilled. The rash of departures is a quirk of timing, party officials say. Devin Rankin, who's worked with the party for eight years, is stepping aside from her development duties -- which she does as a consultant  -- to become development director for a biotech startup in downtown Phoenix. And Vanessa ...read the rest of this post

Who's running the Goddard campaign? -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 18 Jun 2010 17:19:20 -0700
Two weeks ago, I sat down with Rodd McLeod at Phoenix's Fair Trade Cafe to talk about the gubernatorial campaign. McLeod, the energetic New Yorker who shepherded Gabrielle Giffords into Congress in 2006, has for the last six months been focused on doing something no previous campaign manager has been able to do: securing the governorship for Terry Goddard. When he was hired, Goddard's team touted McLeod as the kind of tough, savvy campaign general who could take the fight to the Republican nominee for governor and win. His experience with Giffords in southern Arizona was seen as valuable, since high ...read the rest of this post

Governor lashes out at feds for possible SB 1070 suit -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Thu, 17 Jun 2010 16:02:29 -0700
The U.S. Department of Justice won't say whether it has decided to sue Arizona over its tough new immigration law, but according to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, a legal case is already a done deal. Clinton made the assertion in an interview with an Ecuadorian television station that was taped on June 8. The remarks made their way into the mainstream media and the blogosphere Thursday. "President Obama has spoken out against the law because he thinks that the federal government should be determining immigration policy," Clinton said in the interview . "And the Justice Department, under his direction, will be bringing ...read the rest of this post

A potential game changer -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Thu, 10 Jun 2010 18:33:20 -0700
For those weary of tiny steps toward so-called government reform (like renaming the Secretary of State position "lieutenant governor"), look West to California. On Tuesday, California voters endorsed Proposition 14 with nearly 55 percent of the vote. The measure scraps party primaries, puts all candidates on the same ballot, and sends the top two voter-getters to the general election. The proposition passed in all but two of the state's counties, with the "no" votes from Orange and San Francisco counties showing how the state's political extremes viewed the idea of doing away with party primaries. Read more here about the proposition, which ...read the rest of this post

Treasurer Martin: Real gubernatorial race is between me and Gov. Jan Brewer -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Tue, 08 Jun 2010 14:16:50 -0700
There may be five candidates still vying for the Republican nomination for governor, but as far as state treasurer Dean Martin is concerned, only two count: him and incumbent Gov. Jan Brewer. Martin, speaking at a press conference to announce his border security plan on Tuesday, effectively eliminated from the competition opponents Tom Gordon of Mesa, Matt Jette of Apache Junction, and, most surprisingly, Owen "Buz" Mills, a Paulden businessman. Mills has made waves since entering the race in January by funding his campaign war chest with nearly $2.3 million of his own money. Martin, who along with Brewer, is now at a significant financial ...read the rest of this post

Real excuses, no candidacy -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Mon, 07 Jun 2010 13:17:42 -0700
John Munger, R-No Longer Running for Governor, blamed his reluctant departure from the race on the state's Clean Elections system. It was NOT Gov. Jan Brewer's recent surge in popularity for signing SB1070 that drove him away, the Tucson Republican said. Rather, it was the state's public-campaign-finance law, which he was not using but which Brewer and Dean Martin are, allowing them to pull in $2.1 million each in public dollars for their campaigns. "I got out because the Clean Elections mechanism has made it impossibel for me," Munger told Insider last week. Hmmm....sounds like an excuse. A pretty good ...read the rest of this post

States' fiscal outlooks continue to be gloomy -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 04 Jun 2010 10:24:21 -0700
A survey by two national groups concludes that state budgets will have rough sledding in the coming year -- no big surprise to people who have followed Arizona's budget travails. "States, unfortunately, are still suffering," said Scott Pattison, executive director of the National Association of State Budget Officers. That means that state budgets will not recover to pre-recession levels as they go into the 2011 fiscal year, which begins July 1, Pattison said in a news conference announcing the release of a survey done by his group and the National Governors Association. He and Raymond Scheppach, executive director of the governors' group, said state budgets ...read the rest of this post

Brewer: Goddard "has miserably failed" as AG -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Sun, 30 May 2010 13:55:32 -0700
Not to talk politics on a holiday weekend, but have you seen what's going on in the governor's race? The front-runners are fighting over the right to defend SB 1070 like it's the juiciest burger at a Memorial Day cookout.   At the end of the day Friday, we posted an item that looked at how Attorney General Terry Goddard might be trying to re-frame the debate on SB 1070 to his political advantage.    Less than an hour later, Team Brewer responded with a move which would ensure that doesn't happen. The governor issued a statement Friday night saying that she would have ...read the rest of this post

New poll suggests Brewer would best Goddard in gubernatorial contest -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 21 May 2010 13:29:27 -0700
Gov. Jan Brewer's backing of the state's new immigration law may be boosting her popularity against presumptive Democratic gubernatorial nominee Terry Goddard. A new Rasmussen Reports poll, released Friday, suggests that Brewer has attracted, for the first time, more than 50 percent support in her bid for the Governor's office. The poll indicates that 52 percent of likely voters surveyed support Brewer, compared with 39 percent for Goddard. Goddard, currently Arizona's Attorney General, has said he opposes the legislation. Seven percent of voters indicated that they prefer some other candidate; just three ...read the rest of this post

Governor wants helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles to support border security effort -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Fri, 21 May 2010 12:23:57 -0700
Gov. Jan Brewer has sent another salvo in her ongoing war of wars with the federal government regarding border security, this time seeking helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles to help combat illegal drug trafficking. In a May 20 letter to President Barack Obama, Brewer askings the federal government to reallocate some of the nation's network of OH-58 Kiowa helicopters to Arizona for use in border missions. The state currently has 13 such helicopters, but nine are dedicated to training missions, leaving only four to support actual law enforcement efforts. According to a distribution map provided by Brewer's office, the federal government has 158 OH-58 ...read the rest of this post

In Prop. 100 victory, a campaign sees momentum -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Wed, 19 May 2010 17:14:23 -0700
As election returns were rolling in last night, an aide to Gov. Jan Brewer recalled a meeting two months ago in conservative Yavapai County. Brewer was addressing a group of staunch Republicans, and they treated her -- here the aide looked for the right words -- "like dog poop." After last night, you can say goodbye to dog poop. And say hello to the alpha dog. The twin engines of SB 1070 and Proposition 100 have transformed the governor's race, taking a candidate dismissed as "toast" by the intelligentsia just a few months ago into the favorite in her primary.  SB 1070 may be ...read the rest of this post

The post-Prop. 100 spin -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Tue, 18 May 2010 23:09:56 -0700
What do you do when your opponent just scored a big win by getting voter approval of a tax increase? If you're Buz Mills, GOP candidate for governor, you tie Jan Brewer to Terry Goddard and try to kill two birds with one Proposition 100 stone. That's the theme that emerged well before all the votes were tallied in Tuesday's lopsided win for the temporary sales-tax increase. Mills was out with a news release saying that the GOP governor and Goddard, the presumed Democratic nominee, "have joined forces to not only increase your taxes  but also to deny Arizonans tax relief to bring more jobs to ...read the rest of this post

Governor reiterates her "no new tax cuts" pledge -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Mon, 17 May 2010 14:17:46 -0700
At a rally to urge support for her long-sought sales-tax increase, Gov. Jan Brewer again said she won't call the Legislature back into special session to consider tax cuts. "I am not looking forward to calling the Legislature to address the 'jobs bill,' " the governor said. But while ruling out broad-based tax cuts, she said she remains interested in tax incentives to spur economic recovery. Those incentives would be structured to pay for themselves -- in other words, the tax break would happen only after a certain number of jobs or revenue is created. When lawmakers might convene to consider incentives, ...read the rest of this post

Brewer, Munger trade barbs over border security -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Mon, 17 May 2010 11:52:52 -0700
Gubernatorial candidate John Munger -- having just filed his nominating petitions for the Governor's race -- took time to stop by the Capitol press room on Monday and levy a few jabs at one of his key opponents, incumbent Jan Brewer.   Munger questioned Brewer's leadership on border security, among other things, predicting that any boost she had received in the polls as a result of signing Senate Bill 1070, the state's tough new immigration law, would be short-lived at best.   "What is she doing besides sitting behind her desk, signing bills?" asked Munger, who said Brewer was a "crisis manager" but not a ...read the rest of this post

SB 1070 upsets Ariz.'s only Hispanic governor -- eastvalleytribune.com | Story Info
Mon, 03 May 2010 08:58:43 -0700
Decades before Gov. Jan Brewer would sign Senate Bill 1070, Raul Castro -- Arizona’s only Mexican-American governor -- experienced the racism and discrimination that many believe Arizona’s sweeping new immigration law will cause for Hispanic citizens today.

Voters: Do you want a lieutenant governor? -- azcentral.com | Story Info
Wed, 28 Apr 2010 21:45:46 -0700
The Legislature has sent to the November ballot a measure that would rename the office of Secretary of State as lieutenant governor. But it's more than a name change. SCR1013 would allow voters in their party primaries to select their nominees for governor and lieutenant governor. The winning nominees then would be required to run as a ticket in the general election.  This is the first of a package of so-called government reform bills to make it to the ballot. Still pending are measures that would seek a repeal of the state's public campaign-finance law and one that would require an earlier deadline ...read the rest of this post
