Two of the Arizona Democratic Party's key fund-raising posts are being vacated, just as the party is headed into a hot election cycle. The announcements were made the same afternoon that the Terry Goddard campaign for governor confirmed that manager Rod McLeod was leaving because his commitment to starting the campaign was fulfilled. The rash of departures is a quirk of timing, party officials say. The U.S. Department of Justice won't say whether it has decided to sue Arizona over its tough new immigration law, but according to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, a legal case is already a done deal. Clinton made the assertion in an interview with an Ecuadorian television station that was taped on June 8. The remarks made their way into the mainstream media and the blogosphere Thursday. For those weary of tiny steps toward so-called government reform (like renaming the Secretary of State position "lieutenant governor"), look West to California. On Tuesday, California voters endorsed Proposition 14 with nearly 55 percent of the vote. The measure scraps party primaries, puts all candidates on the same ballot, and sends the top two voter-getters to the general election. The proposition passed in all but two of the state's counties, with the "no" votes from Orange and San Francisco counties showing how the state's political extremes viewed the idea of doing away with party primaries. There may be five candidates still vying for the Republican nomination for governor, but as far as state treasurer Dean Martin is concerned, only two count: him and incumbent Gov. Jan Brewer. John Munger, R-No Longer Running for Governor, blamed his reluctant departure from the race on the state's Clean Elections system. It was NOT Gov. Jan Brewer's recent surge in popularity for signing SB1070 that drove him away, the Tucson Republican said. Rather, it was the state's public-campaign-finance law, which he was not using but which Brewer and Dean Martin are, allowing them to pull in $2.1 million each in public dollars for their campaigns. A survey by two national groups concludes that state budgets will have rough sledding in the coming year -- no big surprise to people who have followed Arizona's budget travails. "States, unfortunately, are still suffering," said Scott Pattison, executive director of the National Association of State Budget Officers. That means that state budgets will not recover to pre-recession levels as they go into the 2011 fiscal year, which begins July 1, Pattison said in a news conference announcing the release of a survey done by his group and the National Governors Association. Gov. Jan Brewer's backing of the state's new immigration law may be boosting her popularity against presumptive Democratic gubernatorial nominee Terry Goddard. A new Rasmussen Reports poll, released Friday, suggests that Brewer has attracted, for the first time, more than 50 percent support in her bid for the Governor's office. The poll indicates that 52 percent of likely voters surveyed support Brewer, compared with 39 percent for Goddard. Goddard, currently Arizona's Attorney General, has said he opposes the legislation. Gov. Jan Brewer has sent another salvo in her ongoing war of wars with the federal government regarding border security, this time seeking helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles to help combat illegal drug trafficking. In a May 20 letter to President Barack Obama, Brewer askings the federal government to reallocate some of the nation's network of OH-58 Kiowa helicopters to Arizona for use in border missions. The state currently has 13 such helicopters, but nine are dedicated to training missions, leaving only four to support actual law enforcement efforts. As election returns were rolling in last night, an aide to Gov. Jan Brewer recalled a meeting two months ago in conservative Yavapai County. At a rally to urge support for her long-sought sales-tax increase, Gov. Jan Brewer again said she won't call the Legislature back into special session to consider tax cuts. The Legislature has sent to the November ballot a measure that would rename the office of Secretary of State as lieutenant governor. But it's more than a name change. SCR1013 would allow voters in their party primaries to select their nominees for governor and lieutenant governor.
